Recently, you may have received an email titled:
Important news about your articles on eHow.com
The email goes into detail about how eHow has decided to end the writers compensation program (WCP) and offer to pay you for your articles.
Read the main part of the email from eHow here (my notes are in blue):
“After much consideration, eHow has decided to close the WCP and remove a number of user-generated articles from the site beginning May 5, 2011. (Yet another email from eHow telling me that more of my articles will be removed. I usually cringe when I see an email from eHow in my inbox. It is almost always bad news.)
Now, what’s exciting for YOU is that we are extending attractive offers to a select group of great writers to purchase the articles they’ve written for eHow so that those articles can be vetted through our current editorial process, which includes professional fact checking and copy editing. Needless to say, your great work has put you in this special category! (How much is their “attractive” offer? Well, it’s not too attractive if you compare it to what you would make if they just kept your articles online; earning money each month. They offer you an amount which is equal to a few months of your regular eHow commissions. Then they are done with you. They pay you off and take the rights to your articles. You can no longer use those articles or receive commissions from them.)
Beginning today, your WCP console will have the details of your offer. The offer includes the purchase price of your articles, which is based on historical earnings. You will have until May 31, 2011 to accept our offer. (After May 31, the offer may self-destruct.)
By accepting our offer you are agreeing to sell all the rights of your articles to us. We would own the articles from that point on, and will have the ability to review and revise them to ensure they meet our editorial standards. Following the acceptance of the offer, you will receive three payments: one for regular earnings paid in June for money earned from May 1-5, and two equal installments for your buyout offer, which will be paid by June 15 and July 15, 2011 via PayPal. However, if you choose to decline the offer you will receive your last WCP payment for money earned from May 1-5 by June 15, 2011. (Along with your commissions, if you sell them the rights to your articles, they are free to change or delete any affiliate links you have added and any links to your websites that you have established.)
If you agree to sell your articles, we ask that you immediately remove the articles from any other sites that have published them. If you decline the offer, articles will begin to be removed from eHow.com. However, you will retain complete control of all the content you have written and will continue to have rights to publish them anywhere. Additionally, if you choose not to accept our offer, you’ll have an opportunity to retrieve your articles from us between May 17th and May 31st, if you wish to retain them for your records. Further details for article retrieval will be shared through your WCP console. (So it seems like a lose/lose situation for the hard-working writers of eHow. They do give you a bit of money, but overall, it is nothing compared to what you would have continued making with the monthly income stream commissions.)
We truly value your contributions to eHow and know that the site would not be what it is today without people like you.” (Yes, that is true. eHow would not be what it is today without us writers. They do need us, and they need our articles. Think of how much effort you have spent writing your articles. eHow knows how much money your articles make for them every month. When they own your articles free and clear, think of how much more money they are going to be making every month.)
As eHow writers, we can continue to earn our monthly commission checks and keep the WCP (Writers Compensation Program) running. BUT, WE MUST ALL WORK TOGETHER.
If we sign a petition to boycott the sale of our articles and demand to keep the WCP program running as usual, then eHow will be forced to listen to the people. They won’t be able to continue the eHow site or making money without the writers’ articles.
Afterall, the whole idea behind eHow was to make a site in which normal people shared “how-to” info with other normal people. The idea was never to have a big company like Demand Studios buy off the individual eHow writers and edit or change their articles to generate more money for the big company.
So if you agree to keep the eHow WCP (Writers Compensation Program) running as usual and not to be bought off by Demand Studios, then express your freedom of speech, and please post your opinion below.
